Musiqa is proud to present new music by the winner of the fourth round of the Cross-Country Chamber Consortium’s Black, Latinx and Indigenous Emerging Composer Commission. Che Buford’s “as if it were a scene made up in my mind, that is not mine, but it's a made place” for clarinet, piano, violin and cello takes its name from the first stanza of Robert Duncan’s poem “Often I Am Permitted to Return to a Meadow,” and explores the idea of refuge and escape during a time of social and political turmoil.
Musiqa’s 2025 Emerging Composer Commission winner Alexis C. Lamb is a composer, percussionist, and educator whose work seeks to cultivate a connectedness to natural, historical, and societal relationships. The world premiere of her new composition takes its inspiration from holographic images. Musiqa’s 2025 Catalyst Commission for local emerging composers was awarded to Katy Jiaying Li: the world premiere of her drifted ink, but still explores motion, fragility and sonic transformation. Both works were written to be premiered by WindSync.
In addition, WindSync will perform Nicky Sohn’s “A Night at Birdland." This composition was written for WindSync and premiered in 2024 at the Chelsea Music Festival in New York City. Composer Nicky Sohn found inspiration in the iconic jazz musician Charlie Parker, and the piece evolved over months of close collaboration with the members of WindSync.
Musiqa is proud to partner with Inprint to bring new poetry to our stage. Houston poet Andrew Kozma has been commissioned to write a new work inspired by these compositions.
