Editing Services

I’m a writer who has published poetry, fiction, plays, and non-fiction in a large number of literary and speculative fiction journals such as The Believer and Analog. I’ve won awards and had plays produced. I have experience putting together books of poems and structuring novels, as well as critiquing both. I have taught at the university level for over twenty  years (The University of Houston and the University of Florida), including both beginning and advanced creative writing classes, and have led smaller, more-focused workshops in poetry and non-fiction outside of the university system.

I offer mentoring, copy-editing, and developmental critique services for all levels of writers, at any stage of a project.

I specialize in science-fiction, fantasy, and horror in both adult and young adult. I have experience with novels and short stories, poetry, plays, and creative non-fiction. However, I am open to all genres of writing.

My goal is to help develop you into a better writer. I aim my mentoring and critiques toward your personal goals, always with a focus on finding ways to help you hone your skills through the project. I don’t judge your writing for whether it’s good or bad, but always look for ways we can use your current project to improve mastery of your craft.

I charge the industry standard of .05/word for editing, though this can vary depending on the difficulty of the edit and what a client is specifically asking for. By default, I offer a free five-page sample edit so you can see whether my editing style matches your needs, and also so I can get a clearer view of the project’s scope.

Mentoring

I will work with you one-on-one with your writing. This can be any genre and encompasses individual poems, short stories, collections, or book-length manuscripts. The individual cost and time involved will be decided between us based on your particular needs and goals.

Proofreading/Line-Editing

Proofreading and line-editing are both edits for writers who feel their manuscript is mostly complete and serve as final, necessary touches before publication.

A proofreading edit will result in an edited manuscript that purely focuses on errors in grammar and construction. A line-edit will provide an edited manuscript that, in addition to marking errors, also contains suggestions and questions about the writing and the story. In both cases, this service also involves a consultation after the edit has been delivered where you can ask specific questions about my corrections and suggestions.

Developmental Editing

Are you looking for a big-picture view of a completed manuscript? Perhaps advice on re-ordering chapters, solidifying character arcs, and/or clarifying and deepening world-building? If so, then you might benefit from a developmental edit.

A development edit involves line editing as well as larger picture comments. In practice, you will receive a fully-edited manuscript, a several-page editorial letter, and a direct consultation after the edit is finished so you can ask specific questions about my comments and suggestions.
